What breaks most often in Jacksonville, and why

Capacitors and contactors

These electrical parts start and run the outdoor unit. Long run times, heat and storm surges wear them out, and salt in the air can corrode connections near the coast.

Condenser fan motors

They run for thousands of hours a year. When one weakens, the system overheats and cools poorly.

Clogged condensate drains

Humidity makes the indoor coil produce gallons of water, and algae builds in the drain line. A clog backs water into the pan and can shut the system off.

Refrigerant leaks and coil corrosion

Coils near the beaches, the intracoastal and the St. Johns River corrode faster because of salt in the air. A small pinhole leak slowly drains refrigerant and cooling.

Thermostats and controls

Failed sensors and wiring problems make a healthy system act broken.

Airflow problems

Dirty filters, blocked returns and leaky ducts reduce cooling and can freeze the indoor coil.

Salt air, humidity and storms

Humidity makes the indoor coil and drain work hard all summer. The usual signs of a drain problem are water around the air handler, a musty smell and a system that shuts off on its own.

If a leak appears, turn the system off to avoid ceiling and floor damage, and call.

Homes closer to the Atlantic, the Intracoastal Waterway and the St. Johns River see salt corrode outdoor coils and electrical connections faster. Rinsing debris off the outdoor unit gently, keeping it clear of plants and having the coil checked every year helps catch corrosion early.

Thunderstorms add surges that damage capacitors and control boards. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and Ready.gov has a full preparation guide.

Before a storm, turn the AC off at the thermostat if power may go out, clear loose items from around the outdoor unit and wait for stable power before restarting. If your home is in a flood zone, ask us about raising the outdoor unit on a stand, and never run a system that has been flooded until it has been checked.

What happens on an AC repair visit

  1. You tell us what the AC is doing. When it stopped, what you heard, whether there was a storm or a power flicker.
  2. We check the basics. Thermostat mode and setting, filter, breaker and airflow at the vents.
  3. We test the system. We test electrical parts with a meter, check refrigerant pressures, measure the temperature drop across the coil, check the blower and fan motors, and inspect the condenser coil, the indoor coil and the drain.
  4. We look for corrosion and moisture problems. Especially near the coast, since they cause repeat failures.
  5. We tell you why it failed. If a capacitor failed because a motor is overheating, replacing only the capacitor would not last.
  6. You get options and a price. Before work begins. If the system is old and the repair is large, we give you a replacement price too.
  7. We repair and test it. We run the system and confirm it is cooling before we leave.

Repair or replace your Jacksonville AC?

Jacksonville is mostly a repair first market, because most failures are single parts. We look at:

  • Age. Systems commonly start to fail between 10 and 15 years.
  • What failed. A capacitor, contactor, drain or thermostat is a simple repair. A compressor, a corroded coil or a major leak on an old system is a different decision.
  • Repair history. Several failures in a short time suggest more are coming.
  • Humidity control. A house that always feels damp may need a different system or duct fix.
  • Refrigerant. Systems that use R-22 are costly to recharge because it is no longer produced.

We give you a repair price and a replacement price so the decision is yours. See AC installation in Jacksonville.

Heat pumps and heating in Jacksonville

Jacksonville has a long cooling season and a short, mild heating season, with a few freezing nights in a typical winter. Most homes use a heat pump for both, with electric heat strips backing it up on the coldest mornings.

Some older homes have gas furnaces or separate electric heat.

We repair and replace heat pumps, including ones that cool but will not heat. See heat pump repair in Jacksonville and heat pump installation in Jacksonville.

We also repair gas furnaces, and our furnace repair pricing guide shows Jacksonville prices: a service call of $69 to $89, a typical repair of $200 to $450 and a major repair of $800 to $1,600.

JEA rebates and what to check first

Which utility serves you decides which rebates apply. JEA serves most of Duval County.

Some beach communities and outlying areas are served by other providers, such as Beaches Energy Services or Florida Power & Light, so look at your electric bill.

JEA's heating and cooling rebate page lists $200 for ENERGY STAR certified central air conditioners, heat pumps or ductless mini split systems, and $50 for an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat.

The equipment has to be ENERGY STAR certified and rated in the AHRI database, heat pumps have to meet minimum SEER2, EER2 and HSPF2 ratings, and you apply online after the work is finished.

JEA's HVAC tune up page lists a $50 rebate for a maintenance visit that includes a refrigerant charge check, for JEA residential electric customers with a heat pump or central AC, limited to one tune up per unit every three calendar years, with the application due within 90 days of service.

That page listed an application deadline of October 10, 2026, so check whether the program continues.

Amounts and rules change, so confirm current terms with JEA before you buy. There is no federal tax credit for equipment installed in 2026, because the Section 25C credit ended after December 31, 2025.

How to choose an HVAC contractor in Jacksonville

Whoever you hire, a few checks protect you:

  • Check the contractor's license on the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation website, myfloridalicense.com, and ask to see proof of insurance.
  • Get the price in writing before work begins, with the scope clearly stated.
  • Ask for the make, model and size of any equipment being installed, and how the size was chosen.
  • Ask what the manufacturer's warranty covers and what the contractor's labor warranty covers.
  • Be careful with a replacement price quoted over the phone without anyone seeing your home.
  • Make sure the permit is included in a replacement.

Common questions

How much does AC repair cost in Jacksonville?

Most repairs run about $180 to $400. Major repairs such as a coil or compressor run $1,100 to $2,800. The diagnostic call is typically $69 to $89.

Do you offer emergency AC repair in Jacksonville?
Why is my AC freezing up?

Common causes are a dirty filter, low airflow or low refrigerant. Turn cooling off and run only the fan to thaw it, then call. Running it frozen can damage the compressor.

Does salt air really damage an AC?

Yes. Near the beaches, the Intracoastal and the St. Johns River, salt speeds corrosion of outdoor coils and electrical connections. Keeping the unit clean and having the coil checked yearly helps.

Is there a JEA rebate for a new AC or heat pump?

JEA lists $200 for ENERGY STAR certified central AC, heat pump or ductless systems, plus $50 for a smart thermostat and $50 for a tune up. Confirm current terms with JEA before you buy.

Is there a federal tax credit for a new system?

Not for equipment placed in service in 2026. The federal 25C credit ended after December 31, 2025.

Do you also work in Orlando?

Yes. See HVAC in Orlando.
