What to have ready when you call
- The brand and model number. They are on the data plate on the outdoor unit and on the indoor unit or furnace.
- How old the system is, if you know.
- What it is doing and when it started. Noises, smells, leaks and error codes all help.
Choosing a brand when you replace
A well-installed mid-range system often outperforms a premium system installed badly. Correct sizing, a clean installation, and good airflow through the ducts matter as much as the name on the unit.
When you compare quotes, compare the same things: equipment model and efficiency rating, system capacity and how it was chosen, what the manufacturer's warranty covers, what the installer's labor warranty covers, and what is included, such as permits, removal of the old unit and thermostat.
