Cold air, or none, on a freezing morning
This is the classic winter failure: a defrost control fault, a reversing valve that will not shift, dead backup heat or low refrigerant.
In Magna a heat pump goes through freezing, snowy winters and hot, dry summers, and the cold season is when weak parts show. Golden Comfort AC & Heating Repair repairs heat pumps and ductless mini splits in Magna and across the Salt Lake Valley in every major brand.
A typical repair runs $260 to $575. We explain the cause and the price before any work begins.

This is the classic winter failure: a defrost control fault, a reversing valve that will not shift, dead backup heat or low refrigerant.
A thin frost clears in the defrost cycle. A heavy shell of ice that stays is a fault, so shut the unit off and call.
Backup heat should only help on the coldest stretches. If it runs all day, the heat pump is not carrying its share, and your bill will show it.
Often a filter choked by poor air days. Turn cooling off, run the fan to thaw it and replace the filter.
Usually a failed capacitor. Do not keep forcing it to start.
Magna's weather makes a heat pump work in both directions: snow and deep cold in winter, then hot, bone dry summer afternoons. The defrost system, reversing valve and backup heat do the most in winter, and the compressor and fan work hardest in summer.
Because winter inversions trap particles that coat filters, airflow problems are common, and they cause many service calls.
A young system with one failed part is usually worth repairing. A compressor failure on a system over 10 years old, a leaking coil or two major repairs within two years usually points to replacement.
In older homes without ducts, a ductless system may be the better replacement. See heat pump installation in Magna.
Leave refrigerant and electrical work to a technician. Refrigerant work requires federal certification.
If none of that helps, call, and tell us the temperature outside.
A heat pump built for mild climates struggles in Salt Lake winters. If yours is the wrong type, repairs may not be the answer.
We can tell you whether a failure is a part problem or a model problem, and if the system is not built for your climate, we say so before you spend on a repair.
