A furnace for a short, mild winter
Southwest Utah has long summers and short winters, so a furnace here runs far fewer hours than one in Salt Lake. That makes a mid efficiency condensing furnace the usual best value, and the top efficiency tiers slow to pay back.
Red dust also finds its way into return air and filters, so we plan filter access and a return that is easy to maintain.
| AFUE rating | Tier | Added to base price |
|---|---|---|
| 80 percent | Standard efficiency | Base price |
| 90 to 92 percent | Mid efficiency condensing | Add $400 to $900 |
| 95 to 96 percent | High efficiency | Add $900 to $1,800 |
| 97 to 98 percent or more | Premium modulating | Add $2,200 to $4,000 |
Rebates and incentives
If you are an Enbridge Gas Utah customer (formerly Dominion Energy), the utility's ThermWise program has listed $350 for a qualifying natural gas furnace, and a rebate of up to $1,200 for a dual fuel heat pump system.
Amounts change, so check the ThermWise equipment list first. The federal tax credit ended after 2025.
For heat pumps, Rocky Mountain Power's Wattsmart program has offered rebates, and some cities in this area run their own electric utilities, so check your bill.
Furnace, heat pump or dual fuel?
Many homes here use heat pumps because winters are mild. A dual fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup for the coldest nights.
See heat pump installation in Washington. We give you the numbers for each and tell you honestly when a straight furnace is the better fit.
What a good installation includes
- A load calculation that sizes the furnace to your home.

- A gas line pressure test and leak check.
- Return air and filter access checked.
- A carbon monoxide detector check. See the CPSC guide.
- The permit and a final combustion check.
How an installation works
- A walk through. We see the space, the ducts and the electrical panel.

- Permit and scheduling. We handle the paperwork and tell you what to expect on the day.
- Installation. Equipment, lines, electrical and drain, then startup checks.

What moves the price of a Washington furnace job
- Furnace location and the venting it needs.
