What a Real Tune Up Includes
At minimum, a real tune up in the $119 to $189 range covers:
- Thermostat operation and calibration
- Air filter inspection (replacement is extra if you need a high MERV filter)
- All electrical connections tightened and inspected
- Capacitor tested with a meter, not just "looks fine"
- Contactor inspection
- Refrigerant pressure check
- Condenser coil visual inspection and rinse
- Evaporator coil visual inspection where accessible
- Condensate drain line cleared and treated
- Blower motor amp draw and function test
- Temperature split test across supply and return
- System startup and run cycle observation
- Written summary with any concerns flagged

How to Prepare for Your Tune Up
- Clear a few feet around the outdoor unit and the indoor equipment so the technician can get to them.
- Replace a dirty filter before the visit.
- Make a short note of anything odd: noises, smells, rooms that never cool, a higher bill.
- Know where the thermostat, the breaker panel and the shut off are.
- Be home, or arrange for access, so the technician can finish the whole checklist.
How to Compare Tune Up Quotes
- Look for a checklist. A price with no list of what is checked is a warning sign.
- Ask what is extra. Refrigerant, coil cleaning, drain treatment and filter replacement are often billed separately.
- Ask about the diagnostic fee. Some companies waive it if you approve the repair, others do not.
- Be careful with very low prices. A bargain tune up can turn into a larger invoice when the visit becomes a sales call.
- Ask for a written summary. You should know the condition of the capacitor, the contactor, the coils and the refrigerant levels afterward.
When to Schedule a Tune Up
- Florida: early spring, before the long cooling season starts.
- Central Valley, Redding and the Inland Empire: March to May, ahead of the first triple digit week.
- Bay Area: spring, and again in fall if you use a heat pump.
- Utah: April or May, ahead of the hot, dry months.
- Heat pumps anywhere: once before cooling season and once before heating season.
What a Tune Up Cannot Fix
A tune up cleans, tests and adjusts. It cannot bring a worn compressor back, seal ducts that are leaking in the attic, or fix a system that was sized wrong.
